Tonight we had to put down our dog, Celtie. She was a beautiful Australian Cattle Dog. We rescued her when she was less than a year old, more than fifteen years ago. Since then, we've added two more puppies to our family, but Celtie was always the queen of the house. When she was a puppy, we could play fetch for hours, tossing rope back and forth. When we got her, she was oddly timid, she wouldn't go up or down stairs. Oh yeah she ran outside several times, more than any of our other dogs so far, but she was fine.

Protective creature too. Celtie would always stay with who she thought the 'alpha' of the house was. She didn't like to leave someone by themselves. Usually she stayed with my dad, but if I was home it was me, and if it was just my younger brother, she'd stay with him. Hell of a growler but she really mellowed out late in life. Though, never quite enough to completely rid oneself of the worry that she'd bite at ya. It's been years since you could really play with her. The last few years, she'd sit on her favorite spot on the living room furniture, lick it until she was tired, and then sleep. She was a constant, something you always expected to see when you came in. That's going to be tough, not seeing her there, or sitting at the foot of my parent's bed with the other dogs.

This had been a long time coming. She couldn't see well, couldn't hear, had trouble walking, and often went to the bathroom in the house on a daily basis. We tried to make sure her last moments were peaceful. The whole family stayed there with her, we fed her a bunch of treats. When they gave her the sedative, old Celtie still tried to fight it. Every time she almost nodded off she'd jerk herself awake until it was too much for her to take. I held her with my dad as they did the final deed, watched and felt her take her last breaths. I think in her last moments she was happy when she realized what was happening.

She was curmudgeonly, she was irritable, and she didn't like people who wore hats. But I'm still gonna miss her. Goodbye Celtie, I love you.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It's never easy, but at least you were able to be there for Celtie until the end.
